I'm Outta Here |
At the outset, this painting represented an inner conflict about having to do the right thing in relation to an ongoing predicament. Seeking relief, the figure in the painting is leaving it all, both physically and mentally.
Toward the painting’s completion, an opportunity arose to visit the Navajo Reservation in Chinle. Meanwhile, I had realized that the outcropping, upon which the aproned figure was standing, resembled an Indian ruin I had visited (near Arcosanti). While mulling over the coincidence, a five year old child visited my studio and asked “Why doesn’t the dark angel look meaner?” Even though the dark angel seemed to be in a winning position due to my personal feelings of not being able to live up to my challenges, I had never considered the possibility that it should look angry. I told my visitor something inane in support of my friendly dark angel but after she left, I decided to try to do a mean version.
In the course of the transformation while considering the trip, the dark angel took on the appearance of a Native American. The painting became a painting about white man’s intrusion and wrongdoing. Instead, I went to the beach in Mexico and gave too much money to an expatriate who ran a bed and breakfast and gave us too much food. |
